How To Deal With Anxiety As A Response To Stress

There is a nursing process that we can apply to the care of our friends and relatives sufferring from anxiety and stress related illness.

I mentioned in some of my blog posts that I used to play chess and had a chance to play in tournaments. Today I would like to add that I used to work as as a nurse providing services to various illness cases. I remember during my chess days that there was a Chinese player who fell unconscious in the middle of the game. This is a case of psychiatric mental health. This inspired me to share to you some practical solutions to anxiety problems.

Anxiety is the negative response to stress. This means that stress comes first before anxiety. On the other hand, stress is the wear and tear that life causes on the body when the person is not adapted or has difficulty dealing within a life situation.

Although my blog title is about dealing with anxiety, I will discuss some pointers on how to deal with stress. For example, when you play chess with your friends, you can feel relax because that is just a friendly game. But if you play chess in tournaments, you feel very stressful. Another example is when you speak in front of your family, you feel nothing. But when you speak in public, you feel nervous or distress.

We can now conclude that we can avoid stress by conditioning our minds or by having the right mindset. We can imagine that a tournament game is only a friendly game, and speaking in public is just speaking in front of a family. You will just assume that your opponent in a tournament game is your friend, and assume that the public you are speaking are just your relatives.

Another good example is a job of a fisherman. For him, this could be stressful but for a hobbyist, fishing is fun. The second person has the mindset that this is just a hobby whereas the first person has the wrong mindset for his job.

It is therefore advisable that you should be passionate for your job to avoid stress. For example, a person who has passion in writing would not have a hard time working as a blogger.

Although our body has defense mechanisms to combat stress, there are times when a person will not be able to resist it and eventually exhaust himself. This is where anxiety becomes a response to stress. There are four levels of anxiety: mild, moderate, severe, and panic. The last two levels might need medications and it is advisable for you to consult your doctor for proper prescription.

I will share to you how a nurse works with anxious clients for mild and moderate level.

Here are some common signs that a client has anxiety disorders:

  1. restlessness
  2. irritability
  3. feeling of discomfort, helplessness, or apprehension
  4. difficulty in speaking
  5. disorganized thought process
  6. hyperactivity

In case you see these signs from your friends and relatives, these are the things that you should do:

  1. Remain with the client at all times. This is a precaution because an anxious client should not be left alone. Anxiety level might escalate anytime.
  2. Find a quiet area like a small room or secluded place and let the client stay there. Anxiety can be escalated by external stimuli particularly noise. A small room can make a client feel secured.
  3. Always remain calm in your approach like modulating the tone of your voice. Feeling of calmness is contagious. If you are calm, then the client feels you are in control of the situation.
  4. Speak to the client in short, simple and clear statements. The client’s ability to understand abstractions or complexity is impaired.
  5. Avoid asking or forcing the client to make choices. This is similar to asking questions. Anything that will make the client think should be avoided because he or she may not be able to make decisions or solve problems.
  6. Always relax and avoid feelings of discomfort. Anxiety is contagious. Avoid raising your own level of anxiety. Remain always calm.
